Artist Statement
“How does it feel to be a black woman in predominately white spaces?” This is the question I answer through my work. My influences come from the women who came before me the artists, mothers, sisters, and daughters alike. While I search for answers I also search to find ties to my heritage that have been severed by American culture. The dark history of this country makes me feel both lost and found, invisible yet hyper-visible. Through the dichotomy of joy and pain, I am creating the soundtrack of my life where I seek to find peace. My work is the visual love child of Marvin Gaye and bell hooks.

Biography
Alessia Redwine (born 2002) is a Boulder-based, contemporary artist who explores the intersection of pain and joy through captivating paintings. Through her work, she seeks to liberate Black Americans from the darkness of oppression and illuminate them with a light that shows both the pain and joy that exist in the black experience.
Redwine's passion for painting has granted her the platform to express the sadness and perseverance of this world while inspiring viewers to stand in their strength and live life through radical joy. Her artistic mission is to combat the extinction of the black experience in art history. In November 2023, she curated her first exhibition which focused on black liberation and joy. Redwine will continue to pursue her artistic mission by showcasing work from herself and other black artists.
Redwine graduated from the University of Colorado at Boulder in December 2023, and, earned her Bachelor of Business Administration degree. She also graduated with a minor degree in Art Practice. Currently, Alessia lives in East Boulder with her older brother, Will, in an apartment with her twenty-two house plants and her sister’s cat, Tuna. You can find her on Instagram posting about her art, @theartofmakingwine, or with her nose in a black feminist book at a local coffee shop in Boulder.
